For a nostalgic stroll down the orange carpet, here are some key moments in the 20-year history of Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards.
Hosts and Musical Performers
- 1988: Tony Danza hosts, and co-host/pop princess Debbie Gibson performs. Nick producer/creators extraordinaire Dan Schneider (Zoey 101, Drake & Josh, All That, The Amanda Show, Kenan & Kel) and Brian Robbins (All That, Kenan & Kel, The Nick Cannon Show, Cousin Skeeter) pitch in with hosting chores as well.
- 1989: Nicole Eggert (Charles in Charge) and Wil Wheaton (Stand by Me, Star Trek) host. The music rocks with boy band New Kids on the Block and Corey Feldman.
- 1990: Dave Coulier (Full House) hosts and David Faustino (Married with Children) and Candace Cameron (Full House) co-host. Keeping it all in the family, Cameron's brother Kirk wins Favorite TV Actor. It's Hammer Time thanks to none other than M.C. Hammer.
- 1991: Corky Nemec (Parker Lewis Can't Lose) hosts. Bart Simpson makes KCA history as the first animated character to accept an award (Favorite TV Show: The Simpsons)
- 1992: Holly Robinson hosts and Tori Spelling and Brian Austin Green co-host the first live Kids' Choice Awards telecast. A very animated, wacky duo Ren & Stimpy opens the show.
- 1994: Candace Cameron and Joey Lawrence (Blossom) host -- and Cameron scores an award for Favorite TV Actress
- 1995 & 1996: Whitney Houston hosts both. Brandy performs and wins Favorite Singer in '95, and Houston opens the show musically in '96. Rosie O'Donnell co-hosts via satellite from a New York Harbor cruise in '96.
- 1997: Rosie O'Donnell hosts the milestone 10th Annual Kids' Choice Awards show with 6,000 kids at the Nick-O-Drome, the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles. Terry Bradshaw co-hosts. Jewel and Coolio are among the performers.
- 1998: Rosie O'Donnell hosts. Legendary Aerosmith rocks a whole new generation with a performance of their song Pink. Puff Daddy and Hanson also perform.
- 1999: Host Rosie O'Donnell hosts for the third year in a row. Britney Spears, 'N Sync and TLC sing for 8,000 cheering kids and families.
- 2000: Rosie O'Donnell hosts from the legendary Hollywood Bowl with an audience of 17,000 kids. LL Cool J, David Arquette, Mandy Moore and Frankie Muniz co-host. Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, Nick Lachey and the Goo Goo Dolls perform. J. Lo rocks out to "Feelin' So Good" with a slew of dancers, an onstage costume change and a car!
- 2001: The rafters of Barker Hangar in Santa Monica reverberate with the cheers of kids for the event hosted by Rosie O'Donnell. Backstreet Boys, Destiny's Child and the first-ever pairing of Aaron Carter and Lil' Bow Wow wow the live audience with their hits.
- 2002: Pink gets the Kids' Choice 15th anniversary party started with her musical performance. Rosie O'Donnell hosts the milestone, and a record-breaking 22 million kids vote for their favorites.
- 2003: Rosie O'Donnell hosts for her seventh consecutive year. Justin Timberlake rocks Barker Hangar and B2K pump up the volume with a medley.
- 2004: Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz host. Avril Lavigne and Favorite Music Group OutKast perform. OutKast's airborne Andre 3000 makes an aerodynamic entrance onstage for “Hey Ya” (Favorite Song).
- 2005: Ben Stiller hosts. Four-time Kids' Choice Award winner Will Smith marks his first award show musical performance in three years with the debut of Switch in a lavish production number. Punk-pop quintet Simple Plan gets the slime flowing and performs from the middle of the mosh pit.
- 2006: Jack Black hosts and performs. Music superstars/platinum selling recording artists Pink, Chris Brown and Bow Wow rock the house with their hits.
Awards and Winners
- 1988, 1989, 1992 and 1994: Whoopi Goldberg wins the Favorite Movie Actress award. She is nominated again in 1997.
- 1988: Michael J. Fox nabs Favorite TV Actor – two years before his big-screen KCA win as Favorite Movie Actor in 1990; Eddie Murphy wins Favorite Movie Actor, and his Beverly Hills Cop 2 nabs Favorite Movie. Alyssa Milano is Favorite TV Actress; ALF is Favorite Show. Madonna scores Favorite Female Vocalist.
- 1989: Furry alien ALF follows on Fox's heels as Favorite TV Actor, and Who Framed Roger Rabbit? hops to the top as Favorite Movie. Florence Griffith Joyner runs away with Favorite Female Athlete, and Arnold Schwartenegger muscles in to win Favorite Movie Actor. The Cosby Show grabs Favorite TV Series.
- 1990: Newly shaped trophies debut: orange Blimps with built-in telescopes. Michael Jordan wins Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Male Athlete. Back to the Future II's Michael J. Fox and Lea Thompson pick up Blimps for Favorite Movie Actor and Actress. John Travolta accepts the Favorite Movie with Kirstie Alley for Look Who's Talking during his "first comeback." TV's The Cosby Show gets the Blimp again, and Alyssa Milano grabs her third.
- 1991, 1992: Paula Abdul receives the first Hall of Fame Award; Arnold Schwartzenegger gets the second. Will Smith and Keisha Knight Pulliam are TV faves in '91, and Bill Cosby and Roseanne Arnold succeed them in '92.
- 1994: First international category is added to The Kids' Choice Awards: Favorite International Performer. Musical group Let Loose wins.
- 1995: In a KCA first, Tia and Tamera Mowry both win Favorite TV Actress (Sister, Sister). Favorite Book (winner: Goosebumps: Deep Trouble) and Favorite Video Game categories debut.
- 1996: Tia and Tamera win again. Hall of Fame winner Paula Abdul presents 1996 Hall of Fame award to Favorite Television Actor Tim Allen. Jim Carrey is Favorite Movie Actor.
- 1997: Will Smith is inducted into the Hall of Fame. In his second consecutive win for Favorite Movie Actor, Jim Carrey jokingly offers to adopt all 6,000 kids in the audience during his acceptance speech. The Fugees win both Favorite Musical Group and Favorite Song and accept their awards from their concert in Haiti. Host Rosie O'Donnell takes home a KCA Blimp for Favorite Movie Actress.
- 1998: Madonna presents actor Billy Zane with a Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Movie, Titanic, while balancing the blimp on her head and proclaiming that "Kids Rule!" Kristi Yamaguchi took home a Blimp for the third year in a row as Favorite Female Athlete.
- 1999: Kyla Pratt accepts the first ever Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Rising Star. Jonathan Taylor Thomas is inducted into the Hall of Fame. Drew Barrymore, Adam Sandler and The Rugrats Movie are big screen faves. Tara Lipinski and Michael Jordan score Favorite Athletes.
- 2000: Will Smith takes home three orange Blimps for Favorite Male Singer, Favorite Song and Favorite Song from a Movie (Wild Wild West). His son Trey accompanies him onstage and thanks the audience for listening to his dad's records. Kid's Choice veteran Rosie O'Donnell is inducted into the Hall of Fame. Mandy Moore wins in the new Favorite Rising Star category.
- 2001: Tom Cruise, Drew Barrymore, Susan Sarandon, Jim Carrey, Destiny's Child and Britney Spears are among recipients of coveted Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Blimp Awards. Cruise wins first Wannabe Award. In a unique moment in award show history, Cameron Diaz demonstrates a very special talent in the first-ever celebrity burp-off, held during red carpet arrivals, and walks away proudly with First Place honors.
- 2002: Sarah Michelle Gellar scores the first Butt Kicker Award for Favorite Action Hero. BMX superstar pro-biker Dave Mirra breaks his own record for a double back flip on a BMX bike by performing the stunt and landing in a 4,000-gallon tank of Nickelodeon's signature green slime.
- 2003: Original best belcher Cameron Diaz (2001) passes the Blimp to this year's champ Justin Timberlake. Will Smith accepts the annual Wannabe Award, an honor bestowed on a celebrity role model who kids most "want to be," from rising star Nick Cannon, whom he once mentored. This year's Favorite Athlete, Tony Hawk, also becomes world-record Skateboarding Slime Diver, landing in an 11,000 gallon tank of the green goo. 2004: Jim Carrey, Amanda Bynes, Frankie Muniz, OutKast, SpongeBob SquarePants, Harry Potter, Ellen DeGeneres, Tony Hawk, Hilary Duff and the Los Angeles Lakers capture top honors, along with Wannabe Award winner Adam Sandler. BMX champ Mat Hoffman wows the crowd with a spectacular "World Record Skydiving Bike Jump," landing in a slime lake.
- 2005: The Wannabe Award is presented to Queen Latifah by Halle Berry. And in a breathtaking Kids' Choice stunt, Donald Trump triggers a World Record-setting human cannonball with his oft-dreaded declaration, “You're fired!” and the skyward soaring daredevil ultimately lands in a net that explode into Nickelodeon's signature green slime.
- 2006: Favorite Movie Actor (Hitch) Will Smith walks off with his fifth Blimp. Favorite Voice in an Animated Movie (Madagascar) Chris Rock also accepts the Wannabe Award. SpongeBob SquarePants absorbs honors for the fourth consecutive year as Favorite Cartoon. Tony Hawk hosts a breathtaking aerial skiing slime stunt, as US Olympic Freestyle Aerial Skier Ryan St Onge nails a gravity defying freestyle ski stunt off a snowy slope, plunging into 10,000 gallons of Nickelodeon's signature green slime. Former Burp Award winners Hugh Jackman (2005) and Justin Timberlake (2003) face off. Judges David Spade, Rob Schneider and John Heder called it as they heard it, and so did the kid audience via nick.com and wireless text messaging. Timberlake took the prize.
