Following are some key moments in the history of Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards, the only awards show that gives kids the power to vote for their favorites in movies, television, music, sports and much more -- and honors their opinions with a live show filled with the stars they love.

Celebrity Hosts and Performances:

  • 1988: All That and Kenan & Kel creator and writer -- and former kid stars from Head of the Class -- Brian Robbins and Dan Schneider co-host the Kids' Choice Awards with Tony Danza and Debbie Gibson. New Kids on the Block give the first-ever Kids' Choice performance.

  • 1995, 1996: Whitney Houston is first celebrity to host more than one Kids' Choice Awards. Rosie O'Donnell prepares for full 1997 hosting duties by co-hosting with Whitney via satellite from a New York Harbor cruise in 1996.

  • 1997: Rosie O'Donnell hosts the landmark 10th Annual Kids' Choice Awards show with 6,000 kids at the Nick-O-Drome, the Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles. Jim Carrey, Will Smith, Chris Farley, Tim Allen, Scott Wolf, Melissa Joan Hart, Cindy Crawford, Tyra Banks, The Fugees, Coolio, Jewel and Shaquille O'Neal are among the celebrities who participate in the show.

  • 1998: Legendary musical group Aerosmith rocks a whole new generation with a performance of their song "Pink." Madonna appears in the show as a presenter.

  • 1999: Host Rosie O'Donnell entertains 8,000 cheering kids and families for the third year in a row. Drew Barrymore, Sporty Spice, Brendan Fraser, NSYNC and TLC are among the celebrities who participate in the show.

  • 2000: The Kids' Choice Awards airs from the legendary Hollywood Bowl with an audience of 17,000 kids. Rosie O'Donnell acts as the Mistress of Ceremonies, while LL Cool J, David Arquette, Mandy Moore and Frankie Muniz co-host.

  • 2001: The rafters of Barker Hangar in Santa Monica reverberate with the cheers of kids and their families who gather for the star-studded event, hosted by Rosie O'Donnell. Multi-platinum-selling artists Backstreet Boys, Destiny's Child and the first-ever pairing of Aaron Carter and Lil'Bow wow the live audience with their biggest hits.

  • 2002: Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Awards celebrates its 15th Anniversary with double platinum recording artist Pink who gets the party started' with her explosive, musical performance. Rosie O'Donnell hosts the milestone event in which a record-breaking 22 million kids vote for their favorites.

  • 2003: Rosie O'Donnell hosts for her seventh consecutive year. Justin Timberlake rocks Barker Hangar with his hit "Rock Your Body" and B2K pump up the volume with a "That Girl"/"Girlfriend" medley.

    Awards and Winners:

  • 1988, 1989, 1992, 1993: Whoopi Goldberg wins the Favorite Movie Actress award. She is nominated again in 1997.

  • 1990: Michael Jordan wins first Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Male Athlete. John Travolta accepts the Favorite Movie award with Kirstie Alley for Look Who's Talking during his "first comeback."

  • 1991: Paula Abdul receives first Hall of Fame award.

  • 1993: First international category added to The Kids' Choice Awards: Favorite International Performer. Musical group Let Loose wins.

  • 1996: Hall of Fame winner Paula Abdul presents 1996 Hall of Fame award to Tim Allen.

  • 1997: Will Smith is inducted into the Hall of Fame. Jim Carrey jokingly offers to adopt all 6,000 kids in the audience during his acceptance speech for Favorite Movie Actor. The Fugees win both Favorite Musical Group and Favorite Song and accept their awards from their concert in Haiti.

  • 1998: Madonna presents actor Billy Zane with a Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Movie, Titanic, while balancing the blimp on her head and proclaiming that "Kids Rule!"

  • 1999: Kyla Pratt accepts the first ever Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Rising Star. Jonathan Taylor Thomas is inducted into the Hall Of Fame.

  • 2000: Will Smith is a top nominee and takes home three orange Blimp Awards for Favorite Male Singer, Favorite Song and Favorite Song From A Movie for his work on Wild Wild West. Will's son Trey accompanies him on stage to accept one of the awards. Veteran Kid's Choice participant Rosie O'Donnell is inducted into the Hall Of Fame.

  • 2001: Tom Cruise, Drew Barrymore, Susan Sarandon, Destiny's Child and Britney Spears are among the celebrities who received coveted Nickelodeon's Kids' Choice Blimp Awards. In another unique moment in award show history Cameron Diaz demonstrates a very special talent in the first-ever celebrity burp-off, held during red carpet arrivals, and walks away proudly with First Place honors.

  • 2002: Sarah Michelle Gellar is bestowed with the very-first Butt-Kicker Award for Favorite Action Hero. BMX superstar pro-biker Dave Mirra breaks his own record for a double back flip on a BMX bike by performing the stunt and landing in a 4000 gallon tank of Nickelodeon's signature green slime.

  • 2003: The original "Best Burp" recipient Cameron Diaz (2001) passes the blimp to Justin Timberlake who wins the coveted "Best Burp" award for 2003. Will Smith accepts the annual Wannabe Award, an honor bestowed on a celebrity role model who kids most "want to be," from rising star Nick Cannon (The Nick Cannon Show, Drumline), whom he once mentored.


  • 1992: Nickelodeon's first triple celebrity sliming: the young stars of Home Improvement, Jonathan TaylorThomas, Zachary Ty Brian and Taran Noah Smith.

  • 1993: Veteran actor, and voice of Darth Vader from the Star Wars trilogy, James Earl Jones is slimed.

  • 1995: Comedian and star of Hangin' with Mr. Cooper, Mark Curry is slimed.

  • 1996: Mark Curry passes the torch to actress and rap star Queen Latifah and slimes her.

  • 1997: Madonna sets up her friend Rosie O'Donnell via "videophone" for a sliming.

  • 1998: Rap star Sean Puffy Combs becomes the latest recipient of Nickelodeon's highest honor, a sliming.

  • 1999: WWF's wrestling wild man "Macho Man" Randy Savage turns green with shock after getting slimed.

  • 2000: In addition to winning three orange Blimps, Will Smith receives Nickelodeon's highest honor of the day and is slimed.

  • 2001: The highlight of the evening occurs when surprise guest Tom Cruise receives the first-ever Wannabe Award, presented to a celebrity role model kids most "want to be." The climax of the show features two Nickelodeon Kids' Choice slimings of superstars, Tom Cruise and
  • *NSYNC. Earlier, in the biggest sliming ever, 100 kids in the audience squeal with glee when the green goo splashes down on them.

  • 2002: For the first-time in Nickelodeon history, recording artist Pink inspires a pink-colored sliming following her explosive musical show open. The show concludes in true kid-fashion with yet another surprise celebrity sliming of Adam Sandler who is blanketed in green goo.

  • 2003: Joyfully green Jim Carrey gets gooed and feathered in a supersized sliming inciting shrieks of delight from elated audience members. In a great "gotcha" moment Carrey switched from clueless to cagey, turning to spread the slime to host Rosie O'Donnell and unsuspecting audience members. Charlie's Angel's famous trio -- Cameron Diaz, Lucy Lu and Drew Barrymore -- are caught off-guard with a "noodle" sliming after presenting an award to Frankie Muniz for Favorite Male TV Star.
